The Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, a.k.a. Hartsfield-Jackson or just Atlanta Airport, is located 7 miles south of Downtown Atlanta. The airport has worn many hats over its decades of existence; it has been the world’s busiest by passenger traffic at one point, and more recently by the number of take-offs and landings. It routinely handles 260,000 passengers and over 1000 flights daily, being a major travel hub for Georgia, and for the southeastern part of the United States as a whole. Hartsfield-Jackson is a hub for Delta Airlines, as well as for low-cost carriers such as Frontier Airlines, Spirit Airlines and Southwest Airlines. The airport first took shape in the 1920s on the site of an abandoned racetrack. By the 1930s it was already among the busiest airfields in the world. Over the years, it has seen steady growth and a number of additions and renovations. It currently houses 5 runways and 2 terminals – one each for domestic and international flights. The airport premises are flanked by bustling urban centers as well as quaint historic neighborhoods, both of which have their fair share of hotels and B&Bs.
