Frankfurt Airport, the busiest international airport in Germany and among the busiest in all of Europe (by passenger traffic), occupies a 2000 hectare expanse in Frankfurt, Germany’s fifth largest city. The airport premises are about 7.5 miles southwest of Central Frankfurt, surrounded by the Frankfurt City Forest, and not too far from the banks of the Main River up north. The precinct has developed into a busy financial district and has transport hubs connecting it to several West European cities. Frankfurt Airport is often referred to as Rhein-Main-Flughafen, after the Rhein-Main Air Base that had originally occupied the site from 1947 to 2005. It is over 80 years old now, and has 2 main passenger terminals, plus a smaller terminal reserved for Lufthansa. Besides being a hub for Lufthansa and other Star Alliance airlines, Frankfurt Airport serves several low cost carriers, together handling flights to 275 destinations in over a hundred countries. Accommodations around the airport range from 5-star hotels to boutique establishments; check out our top picks of Frankfurt Airport hotels below.
