Gatwick Airport, a prominent international airport about 30 miles south of Central London, holds the title of the second busiest airport in the United Kingdom (by passenger traffic). Having originated as an aerodrome in the 1920s, it graduated to handling commercial flights in 1933. Over the decades that followed, the airport saw several expansion exercises; these are documented in the Gatwick Aviation Museum in Chartwood. Gatwick is a single-runway airport, with a secondary runway available for emergencies. It has two terminals, North and South, connected by a monorail service. Gatwick Airport is a base for several airlines, including British Airways, EasyJet, Monarch Airlines, Virgin Atlantic and Norwegian Air Shuttle. Travelers flying in or out of the airport have a variety of hotels to choose from, ranging from 4-star establishments just off the terminal buildings, to quaint B&Bs in the surrounding countryside.
