The John F. Kennedy Airport is New York’s primary international airport. In terms of passenger airline traffic, it also happens to be the fifth busiest airport in the United States of America. The airport premises lie about 12 miles southeast of Lower Manhattan, in the neighborhood of Jamaica, Queens. JFK commenced operations in 1949, under the title of New York International Airport. It was renamed in 1963, in the wake of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination. Today, JFK airport houses 6 passenger terminals and 4 runways, together serving over 90 airlines, and handling direct flights to every inhabited continent. Besides being a hub for American Airlines and Delta Airlines, it is also the primary base for JetBlue Airways. The airport is connected to New York City via AirTrain, subway and local buses.
