Rome Fiumicino Airport (also referred to as Leonardo da Vinci International Airport) is one of the most prominent international airports in Italy, besides being one of the busiest in all of Europe (by passenger traffic). The airport is located in the commune of Fiumicino, about 22 miles west of Rome’s historic center. The coast is just a few blocks west of the airport, and the area around it is dotted with tourist landmarks, shopping centers, restaurants and business destinations. Fiumicino Airport commenced operations in 1961, with terminals and upgraded facilities added over time. Today, it houses four terminals (called Terminals 1, 2 3 and 5), and serves a large number of passenger and cargo carriers. Besides being the primary hub for Alitalia (Italy’s largest airline), and Vueling (a Spanish carrier), it serves the likes of Air France, Croatia Airlines, Etihad Regional, Blue Air, and EasyJet, among others.
